Gary Green is a self-taught creative artist from South Central Los Angeles, rooted in the landscape of 1965 Watts. Growing up without formal access to art institutions, Gary developed his artistic eye through everyday life, imagination, and the influence of community, family, and culture.

 

His early inspiration came from comic books, cartoons, magazines like Jet and Ebony, which shaped a lifelong fascination with storytelling through art.

 

Gary’s work includes intricate pencil drawings, layered graphite techniques, and mixed-media pieces that reflect the spirit of Los Angeles. Known for his detailed “line drawings,” he builds images through thousands of single strokes, often using car-hood canvases, surfboards, and experimental surfaces as canvases.

 

After attending Los Angeles Southwest College and  Cal State University  Long Beach, he discovered his artistic path through formal coursework. 

 

Gary has participated in over 40 exhibitions, In 1999, he and his wife Michelle created “Art in the Garden,” transforming their Inglewood backyard into an immersive gallery space featuring multiple artists, live music, and community engagement—bringing a gallery-level experience directly into the neighborhood.
